Why the Maritimes

We at SCM are proud of our home in Canada’s Maritime Provinces (the “Maritimes”) and that nearly all of our team members hold personal roots in this region, in some cases dating back to the 1600s, and in other cases as recent as the 1960s.

The Maritimes are one of North America’s most productive seafood producing regions, second only to Alaska in volume, and surpassing all regions in value per pound of landings.  Together, the three Maritime Provinces represent seafood exports of $3.4 billion in 2015, with $1.68 billion worth from Nova Scotia alone.

The potential for additional value realization and rewarding reinvestment of profits in multi-stakeholder collaborative marine science in the region is immense.  Also, many parts of the region’s waters are of great biological and physical importance, housing many forms of rare ocean treasures, and SCM’s potential part to play in the region’s sustainable management is most exciting.
